I like Sergei Bulgakov. Always have. When I got into my church fathers kick, I relied heavily upon Bulgakov’s narrative in The Lamb of God. I can already here the criticisms, “Bulgakov’s teaching was condemned.” That used to bother me until I saw that one council (a regional one, mind you) condemned him and another council (regional, too) vindicated him. Neither council offered anything like strict logical arguments why he is right or wrong. I’ll admit: there are problems with Bulgakov. His hyper-Platonism, while metaphysically beautiful, is nothing more than glossed-over Gnosticism. However, insert “Sophia” for “Mary” in Maximus and the two men are identical.
