Propitiation or Romans 5:8?

The argument behind using propitiation as a theological term is that it placates the wrath of God against us.  God is wrathful towards us but Christ’s death propitiates that wrath and so he can now love us.

Is that what Scripture says?   Romans 5:8 says that while we were still sinners God demonstrates his love for us in this: Christ died for us

This is the exact opposite of what propitiatory atonement theories suggest.
